Assistant Professor of English

The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies invites applications for an Assistant Professor of English. We seek a colleague with expertise in developmental writing instruction and pedagogy to begin in August 2023. This is a 10-month position with teaching responsibilities beginning annually August 15 and ending June 15. The course load is four 3-credit hour courses per semester, primarily developmental reading and writing courses for first-year students and the composition sequence, including stacked sections that provide support for English language learners. In consultation with the English program director and the department, there may be opportunities to develop new courses that fit the needs of the curriculum. This is a one year position with the possibility for tenure-track the following year.

To be considered, applicants must hold a PhD in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Literacy Studies, Developmental Education, or other relevant field (dissertations must be defended by the end of 2023 at the latest) with a research emphasis in developmental writing pedagogy and experience working with students in such courses. Ability to work with English Language Learners is a plus.

We seek to hire faculty with experience and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, student success, and civic engagement, and who understand the educational benefits of ethnic and racial diversity in the campus community. The candidate will demonstrate openness to social justice, multicultural mentoring, and interest in working with diverse populations. We seek candidates with experience and passion for working with first-generation college students and students of diverse backgrounds. We need educators committed to closing equity gaps and employing culturally relevant pedagogies in the classroom.

Medaille is a growing, private, four-year, liberal arts-based university in Buffalo, New York, serving the educational needs of a diverse student body in Western New York and Southern Ontario through a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. Complete applications by the priority deadline of November 4, 2022 will receive full consideration, but we may review applications until the position is filled. Please submit a CV, a cover letter, a statement of teaching philosophy, confirmation of dissertation defense by end of 2023 (unofficial copies of graduate transcripts confirming PhD or a letter from your dissertation chair confirming dissertation defense date), and contact information for three references electronically to Barbara Bilotta, Director of Human Resources (bbilotta@Medaille.edu). Together, these materials should showcase your teaching experience, your ongoing research commitments, and your commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
